We all know that January is the time for New Year’s Resolutions, but why wait? Give yourself the gift of health this year and try out our “Countdown to a Healthy New Year” challenge! These 12 simple exercises will help you set the stage for good habits in 2019. Plus, you’re guaranteed to feel better throughout the holiday season!
Day 12: Meditate
The holiday hustle and bustle can get overwhelming, so take at least 10 minutes to read, journal, or meditate today. For help, check out our “Mindfulness with Blair” class in the VHP media library!
Day 11: Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated helps your body function properly and prevents dehydration. Most people require approximately 64-80 ounces of water daily (that’s about 2-2.5 liters). Consume at least 64 ounces of fluid today- try fruit-infused water, flavored unsweetened seltzers, and even low-sodium soups or decaffeinated teas.
Day 10: Add Some Color to Your Plate
Add at least one colorful fruit or vegetable to your plate today. Remember, a colorful plate is a healthy plate!
Day 9: Go for a Walk
Walking is one of the best ways to strengthen your heart and tame stress. Walk for at least 15 minutes today. P.S. Walking outdoors has been proven to elevate mood!
Day 8: Stretch
Take at least 5 minutes to stretch and relieve some holiday tension. Find a quiet place and stretch out tight areas or follow one of the stretching routines in the VHPGO media library.
Day 7: Make a List and Check it Twice
The benefits of gratitude include better sleep, healthier relationships, and higher self-esteem, just to name a few. Make a list of all the things you are thankful for this year!
Day 6: Accept the Challenge
Today you get to choose your own challenge. Perform 25 repetitions of one of the following exercises: pushups, squats, or sit-ups.
Day 5: Replace Your Fluids
Replace at least one sugary or caffeinated beverage with fresh water. You can even add some fresh herbs or fruit for extra flavor. (Hint: Mint is a seasonal and delicious addition to water!)
Day 4: Try Yoga
Practicing yoga has many benefits, including improved endurance, mobility, and stress relief. Try yoga by visiting a local yoga studio or streaming a class from the VHPGO media library.
Day 3: Take 20 Minutes to Move
Exercise for at least 20 minutes today. Some great workout options include walking, swimming, strength training, or playing a sport of your choice.
Day 2: Experiment with New Flavors
The year is coming to a close and it’s time to expand your palate. Try at least one new fruit or vegetable today.
